St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis of Assisi Historical Mission is located in the area known as Plaza de Los Valdeses or Sevenmile Plaza. The church was erected in 1881 and dedicated by Father John B. Ptival as a mission of Holy Name of Mary Church in Del Norte, CO. General Juan P. Valdez, his wife Nestoria Salazar de Valdez and their son Thomas Valdez donated the land on which the church and cemetery sit today. It is said that Juan & Nestoria Valdez were buried beneath the floor of the church after death. Approximately 75 families were invovled in the construction, maintenance and refurbishment of the church. Several plaques, signs and stained glass windows are currently displayed in memory of many of those individuals.
